Samsung XR Headset Requires Camera Permission Just Like Android Phones

Samsung and Google are preparing to unveil their cutting-edge devices that will transform mixed reality into XR. Last month, Samsung already revealed the Project Moohan XR headset, where many details about the devices emerged, but still, we are far away from knowing about the actual capabilities of the devices.

Samsung’s Moohan device will utilize the Android XR platform, drawing significant inspiration from the Android ecosystem. As the devices are fast and data-driven, it concerns the safety and security of the users. To keep that in mind, Google has taken a step to bring the camera permission option to Android smartphones.

With the dedicated camera permission feature, users will get control over whether they want a permit to turn on camera permission through a third party or not.

According to the Google spokesperson (via Skarred Ghost), Android XR can give third-party apps access to cameras on an XR headset. However, it will ask the user for their permission before giving apps access, similar to the Android and Galaxy devices.

He adds, “Avatar provider apps/services on the headset generate this avatar video stream.” These apps generate the stream based on user tracking data from OpenXR APIs, e.g., head, hand, eye, and face. The physical inward-facing cameras provide this tracking data by monitoring the user’s movements and facial expressions.

In conclusion, if you use any application on your Android XR headset, then don’t worry about your privacy breaches, as it will handle the camera permission in such a way as to keep you awake if you want to know how the device is running.
